Hollow fiber filter manufacturers are playing an important role in helping the wastewater treatment plant. Hollow fiber ultrafiltration membrane offers an easy method to purify water by utilizing a non-chemical physical obstacle to effectively eliminate microbiological pollutants from water. In contrast to other filtration processes, hollow fiber ultrafiltration membrane doesn’t take out beneficial ingredients from the water. Furthermore, MBR package treatment plant doesn’t waste a lot of water during the purifying process neither it requires the holding pumps or tanks that are commonly utilized in low-pressure applications.
HFM or Hollow Fiber Membranes are micro-thin tubules with porous walls. These tubules resemble long, spaghetti-like, hollow strands. These fibers or tubules are nearly 1mm thick with several 0.2-micron pores that permit water to freely flow through their porous walls. These tiny tubules are around 600-800 times slimmer than the human hair, but still, they play a crucial role in water filtration.

History of Hollow Fiber Ultrafiltration Membrane Technology

It is generally believed that HFM technology was initially developed in 1830. However, the actual appearance for commercial usage was in the 1960s when HFM technology began using as a wastewater reclamation, desalination, blood transfusion, cell culture, and gas separation. For the past 50 years, numerous improvements have been seen in the manufacturing and performance of hollow fiber ultrafiltration membrane technology. It would not be wrong to say that HFM technology allows the hollow fiber filter manufacturers to offer inexpensive water filtration products.

How Hollow Fiber Ultrafiltration Membrane Works?

Hollow fiber membrane is a tiny hollow tube that resembles a drinking straw. Imagine there are thousands of tiny pores or holes in the walls of a straw. These pores or holes have a standard size that only allows pure water to enter from outside the straw to inside the tube, by prohibiting the flow of microbiological impurities such as cysts, virus, and bacteria. Here you can consider a fly as a microorganism who tries to move across a sealed screen door such as a hollow fiber membrane.
The size of a standard pore of HFM is 0.2 microns though these can also be manufactured in the size of 0.01 microns. But the benefit of big pore size membranes is its hydrophilic nature. A large pore size causes less resistance to water flow, thus making it well-suited for certain applications like straw type filter or gravity-powered system. All the products with 0.01 microns membrane material need a higher pressure to push water across the filter, but these products do have numerous benefits of contaminants removal.
