Pure water is a necessity for all living things whether they are humans, animals, or plants.  In order to provide clean and purified water, water filtration is done. This is a process where high-pressure water is passed through a membrane which is a very thin material having small pores. The membrane stops tiny particles of bacteria from passing through in return purifying the water. Wastewater membrane filtration has been in use since the 1960s. Initially, these procedures were very costly but a change occurred in the 1990s as there was a need for pure water. This was practiced on salty water and wastewater bases. As the membranes became popular their prices have decreased. Categories of Membrane Filtration 

There are basically 4 categories which are:
Reverse osmosis (RO): This is a process involving the technology of water purification that utilizes a membrane that is semi-permeable for removing molecules, ions and bigger particles from water.
 Nanofiltration (NF): NF uses a coarser method of filtration as compared to RO. It removes particles which are as small as 0.002 - 0.005 μm. This recent technology was developed for Potable Water Generation. The aim is to remove contaminants from the water without removing minerals from it that are usually removed by reverse osmosis. Nanofiltration membranes can also remove larger ions such as calcium sulfate whereas smaller ions of Sodium chloride can pass easily. 
Ultrafiltration (UF): This process uses concentration or pressure gradients used for separation via a semipermeable membrane. Suspended solutes and solids of higher molecular weight are collected in the retentate while allowing water and molecules of lower weight to pass through. This process is usually used in industries. Water Code engages in Ultrafiltration. 
Microfiltration (MF): A physical process of filtration where polluted water is passed through a membrane which is pore sized for separating microorganisms and other unwanted particles from it. 

Membrane Filter Technique

The membrane filter technique is a process in which a sample of liquid is passed through a membrane with the help of a vacuum system and a filter funnel. This allows the concentration of organisms from the liquid sample on the surface of the membrane. The membrane is then placed on the special plate. The way nutrients pass through the membrane during incubation results in the organism’s growth thus forming colonies on the surface of the membrane. It is a viable technique for testing fluids as it does not require much preparation as compared to the traditional methods. This unique technology also allows enumeration and isolation of microorganisms. These membrane filters are used in industries and laboratories extensively for sterilizing liquids.
